Molasses Nutmeg Spiced Tempeh Sandwich

It’s been awhile since I’ve had tempeh, and although I love the classic Temp Tacs that I always make with my brother it was nice to try something new! Behold, the Molasses Nutmeg Spiced Tempeh Sandwich.

Mmmhmm, this was delicious! See the pickle peeking out of the edge of the sandwich? The pickles made this sandwich. The little punch of vinegar they provide was incredible!

The nutty flavor of the tempeh and the sweet molasses give this sandwich a wonderful flavor palate. Nutmeg and chili powder was also involved, which helped elevate the flavors even more. Success!

The final result of the tempeh being sautéed in molasses looks stunning!

That glossy coat! My stomach is grumbling all over again.

To spruce up the sandwich even further I added some kale (and the pickles of course!), along with some blackberry preserves and mango mustard.

This sandwich is absolutely delectable! I love sprucing up things like a simple sandwich and turning it into a meal. And the fact that it takes only about 10 minutes to prepare is another bonus. Make this sandwich tonight!

Molasses Nutmeg Spiced Tempeh Sandwich

Serves 1

Two slices of bread

1/2 tbsp olive oil

1/3 of a block of tempeh, sliced in half lengthwise

1/2 tbsp blackstrap molasses

1/2 tsp chili powder

1/2 tsp nutmeg

3 cornichon pickles, cut in half lengthwise

A handful of kale, chopped

1/2 tbsp of mustard

1/2 tbsp blackberry preserves

To make this sandwich, start by heating the olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat.

When the skillet is hot, add the tempeh and cook for about 2 minutes.

Sprinkle the tempeh with half of the nutmeg and chili powder, flip the pieces, add the other half of the spices, and cook for another 2 minutes.

After those 2 minutes are up, drizzle/spread the molasses on top of the two pieces and continue cooking another 3 minutes.

Flip the tempeh again (so the molasses side is now on the pan), and cook for a final 3 minutes, or until your tempeh is golden and warmed through.

Then simply layer the tempeh and all the yummy toppings on your sandwich and enjoy!

Try adding a new twist to your favorite sandwich,

Sydney
